The Minister for Budgeting and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu has defended the newly-passed 2023 supplementary budget for ministries, departments, and agencies totaling N2.176 trillion, saying it aims to provide a comprehensive approach to combatting insecurity and improving the lives of Nigerians impacted by the crisis.

Bagudu emphasised that the provisions for capital expenditure outlined in the budget are essential in combating insecurity, noting that the budget allocates 30 per cent of its funds to meet security needs and an additional 25 per cent for infrastructural development.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the country’s security challenges head-on, revealing that 30 per cent of the supplementary budget has been allocated to the defense sector.

He said the same percentage has been designated for palliatives, including conditional cash transfers and cash awards.

The Minister said the supplementary budget represents a significant step in fulfilling President Tinubu’s campaign promises and strengthening the nation’s security apparatus with a focus on defense and welfare.

Emphasising the administration’s commitment to ending insecurity in Nigeria, the Minister further highlighted provisions for projects such as the ongoing Operation Dakatar da Barawo and the construction of new naval bases in Lekki and Epe, among others.

He said these would help the Nigerian Navy in its fight against illegal oil bunkering, and strengthen the country’s defense, among others.

Bagudu called for the support of the general public in helping the government safeguard the lives and property of its citizens.
