When Morravey speaks, she does so with the confidence of a superstar who is preternaturally aware of where she is going. The 20-year-old is a precocious music talent discovered by superstar, Davido, earlier in the year when a cover of a song she made went viral. While her musical talent might suggest otherwise, Morravey, born Daniella Daniel, didn’t grow up in a family accustomed to music-making.
“It was just vibes,” she says. “We are not into music music. They don’t have any musical talent. We were just vibing. Everybody was chill with different things. Growing up, our parents wanted us to focus on our education. I was the only person who liked music music. For them, it was vibes. Listening to different people. Nothing serious.”
However, as the first of five girls, a young Morravry was utterly obsessed with music and it shaped her outlook on life. Fortunately, her parents also loved music and that helped introduce her to a wide range of musical influences.
“Growing up, I just had this love for music,” she explains. “My parents used to listen to music a lot. They used to listen to different kinds of music. Then, in school, they used to do musical stuff for the parties and stuff like that.”
Her earliest musical introductions came courtesy of pop acts like Justin Bieber, Zara Larsson, Bebe Rexha, Sia, and Anne Marie. Later on, as Afrobeats began its gradual rise to popularity, she pivoted to listening to stars like Davido, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage.
Growing up in the multifaceted city of Port Harcourt left an indelible mark on Morravey’s musical identity. Port Harcourt is a melting pot of cultures, languages, and melodies, a place where the sounds of different tribes blend harmoniously. These diverse influences nurtured Morravey’s musical journey and allowed her to draw from a rich tapestry of rhythms and vocal traditions. Eager to make a name for herself in the music industry, the singer began to release covers of popular songs.
“I used to always drop covers on the internet,” she explains, “And for some reason, I don’t like doing one thing over and over again. I used to download beats from YouTube. Then, I used to use people’s songs to freestyle and do covers on them. Sometimes, I’d put the video live with just beats playing. Sometimes, I’d go to the studio and record and make videos of it.”
It is one of those videos of hers that captured the attention of Davido earlier in 2023, leading to him messaging her with an offer to join the reboot of his record label. “Davido texted me and he was like, ‘Your voice is amazing,’” she remembers fondly. Since then, the singer has relocated to Lagos and worked with Davido on his chart-topping album, Timeless, making a grand introduction on the album’s third single, “In The Garden.”
She still can’t aptly put into words the feeling of finding out she’d be on Davido’s album. “It felt wonderful,” she finally admits. “I cannot really explain how I felt. At first, I didn’t even know that I’d be on his album. I was just recording songs. Then, he said, ‘This song is going to be on the album.’ I froze. It was crazy. It felt good.”
As the months have gone by, the focus has shifted to the release of her debut project, the four-track Ravi EP that is supposed to serve as an introduction to the pulse of Morravey. Approaching the project, she just wanted to make resonant music. “We were trying to just make music, at first,” she explains. “Just be creative, but at the same time, be versatile. Don’t do the same thing over and over again. We were just trying out different things to bring Morravey out. Just be creative, do music.”
Continuing, she says, “The Ravi EP has different types of songs. They are all giving different meanings and different vibes. They’ll give you different things. First off, it’ll show you that this girl is creative. Secondly, God blessed her vocals. Then, you catch your vibe and chill. I think that’s it.”
As it is, Morravey is not too concerned about the future. She’s taking every day gently and looking forward to what the future brings her. “I’m not going to lie, I just wanted to make music and give people vibes,” she says. “Music gives you this peace, it distracts you from your problems and stuff like that. You are just focused on another world.
That’s why I’m doing music, to make people happy. I’m going to think about this.”
