Vigilant security operatives in Imo State prevented an attempt by alleged political thugs to kidnap INEC officials and escape with election materials.

It was gathered that the incident happened at a Registration Area Center in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area.

According to reports, attempt by the thugs to kidnap the INEC officials into their waiting vehicle was quickly repelled by the security personnel deployed in the centre.

The armed security operatives fired into the air from a distance, when voters in the area raised an alarm over the presence of the thugs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that there was heavy presence of security personnel on major roads in the state.

In Owerri armed security personnel mounted checkpoints at strategic locations as early as 6:00a.m. to enforce movement restrictions.

Heavily armed soldiers were spotted at different entry points into the city, stopping and searching vehicles and interrogating the drivers and passengers.
