Delivering the 30th inaugural lecture at the Covenant University on Friday in Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Oluseyi Ajayi of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Covenant University said energy poverty and crisis were some of the drivers of human migrations.
He noted that improvement in the country’s national human development index and achievement of the sustainable development goals are hinged on access to modern energy resources.
The theme of the Inaugural lecture was: “Sustainable Energy and Production Technology: Panache for The Development We Want.”
The Don said the government must prioritise and be intentional in the country’s energy sufficiency strategy by giving attractive incentives to woo Renewable Energy (RE) investors.
He disclosed that such incentives should include “tax holidays” provision of low or interest free loans, appropriate for grid connected electricity.”
The Don urged the government to refocus the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan 2014 to include ways to ensure a reduction in the export of raw materials and promote their valorisation.
He said this would reduce unemployment rate, improve the GDP growth rate, improve standard of living and have higher value currency.
Advising the government on how to reduce the “Japa” syndrome that is rampant among the Nigerian youths, especially professionals and people in the academia out of the country, Ajayi said government at all levels should put on ground all the necessary infrastructures facilities, adding that,” people are running out of the country not only for the sake of money but for better opportunities.”
