Factional lecturers’ union rejects NLC, TUC strike action

Students gather in front of University of Ibadan gate

The Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) has said it is not part of the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TLC).

In a press statement on Tuesday, CONUA – a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) – said the TUC is yet to formally communicate to it on the industrial action.

CONUA President, Comrade ‘Niyi Sunmonu therefore called on its members to ignore the industrial action and go about their duties.

“As at the moment of putting together this release, the TUC with whom CONUA submitted affiliation request has not communicated this position on strike action to it.

“Distinguished comrades should therefore note that CONUA cannot be part of the strike action that is not communicated to it. In addition, the affiliation process with the TUC has not been officially established,” the statement reads.

The strike, which is scheduled to begin at midnight on Monday, November 13, 2023, is in protest of the recent assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero, who was allegedly assaulted by police officers in Imo State.
