Timothy Jackson Michael, a music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and musician with decades of experience, and whose musical career has seen him work with International and award-winning artists like Sinach, Ikiri Lawrence, Portia Minyuku, Innocent Mumba and Mosunmola, shares insights into his musical journey, upbringing, and future aspirations.

The Guardian: Can you tell us about your background?

Jackson Timothy: My name is Jackson, Timothy Michael. I’m the third in the family of six. I’m a calm and collected person, and due to the morals my parents instilled in me, it kind of kept me in check all the time. As I grow older, I have learned to take responsibility for all my actions.

Over the years, I have learned not to blame people for any situation I find myself in. I have a close relationship with my parents and siblings. We love each other, and we look out for one another.

My childhood was also fun because my older siblings are my best friends. They got me covered anytime and could do anything for me. They are actually the bases of the things I have learned in life. My parents were also there for me. I could talk to them over any issue; they always give me listening ears all the time.

At what age did you start playing guitar and other musical instruments?

Playing an instrument is just natural to me. My love for musical instruments came naturally. So my first instrument was the drums, and I started playing it at the age of 5. I have so much passion for it. Then at the age of 15, I took an interest in playing the bass guitar. Up till now, I still consider Bass as my major instrument. I have traveled playing the bass either as a backup bass player or as an artist. Another instrument I took interest in is the keyboard. For one to be skilled on the bass, it’s essential to learn the keyboard or piano as well, for a broader knowledge.

Who are your role models and mentors as a musician? Home and abroad?

While growing up as a young musician, my first role model and mentor are Abraham Laboriel. I have never met him before, but he has inspired me immensely. I buy his videos and audio materials to listen to; it has blessed me greatly.

Other music role models that I have include Fred Hammond, John Patitucci, Anthony Jackson, Hadrien Feraud, Federico Malaman, Richard Bona, and Christian McBride.

What else do you do outside being a musician?

I do music production. I also import musical equipment to Nigeria to sell.

Where do you see yourself in the next three years?

I see myself in the next three years creating opportunities and platforms for the next generation to ride on and prosper. Impacting my world of music. Shipping in professional music and studio equipment that will aid and improve our music in Nigeria.

Would you say you are fulfilled with all you have achieved as a musician?

I can boldly say yes. I know I am fulfilled as a musician and a music producer. I have played music home and abroad and have also met great people in that regard. I have learned so much from meeting these people.
