Don finds solution to corrosion, invents natural inhibitors
A lecturer at Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, Dr Izionworu Vincent Onuegbu of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, has said his recent research on tackling industrial corrosion, using natural plant extracts has provided solution to corrosion.
He said, before now, organic and inorganic inhibitors had been used to tackle corrosion, which turned out to be cancerous.
“Our inhibitor can stop corrosion from occurring in the first place. So our inhibitor from natural plant extracts, sourced locally, can stop capital flight and generate revenue for the country if properly deployed. By this, we are also saving money for the nation.
“It can also support the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board(NCDMB) in its job to institutionalise local content in the country,” he said.
In his remarks, the Head of Department of the Chemical Engineering Department at RSU, Prof. Ukpaka Peter, said: “This innovation is without hazards, our finding is, therefore, unique because the outcome is positive.
It can also be used as a coating agent. It is user-friendly.”We appeal to the industrial community to take advantage of the innovation by partnering with us to end corrosion,” Ukpaka said.
