Amnesty International urges media to spotlights pepetrators of human rights violations


A global movement against human rights violations, Amnesty International, Nigeria has appealed to media practitioner to expose perpetrators of human rights abuses in the Country.

Besides, the non-governmental organization sought strong collaboration and synergy with journalists in its global fight against corrupt practices and demand for accountability in governance.

Chairman, Board of Trustees, Amnesty International, Nigeria, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, made the appeal during a media parlay agenda held yesterday in Kano.

Rafsanjani raised concerns over what he described as rising cases of human rights violations citing unlawful killings, forced evictions, oil pollution in Niger Delta, urged immediate intervention of concern authorities.

The human rights activist worried over violation of girl child right to qualify education especially in Northern Nigeria and unlawful arrest and detention of women in Kano in the name of fighting vices. Rafsanjani lamented that the dangerous trend has remain unabated because of the lack of political will of government to nip its in the bud.

While highlighting the role of journalists in exposing the excesses of government and protecting the right of citizens from violation, Rafsanjani said human rights abuses may be worsen, if the media fail to play their part in the society.

Country director, Amnesty International, Nigeria, Isa Sanusi said dissatisfied with the rampant harrassment of security agencies, Genda based violence and other brutality being meted on Nigeria’s on daily basis, the organization has developed a comprehensive human agenda to address the worsening situation.

Sanusi noted that the document designed to guide the government and relevant authorities in Nigeria is meant to protect the dignity and santity of citizens and hold accountable any human rights violence.

According to him, the media parlay was organized because of the crucial responsibility of journalists in the society and the need to promoting freedom and justice through the media.
