2023 Election Petition: Kano standstill for Governor Abba Yusuf

Gov. Abba Kabiru Yusuf
  • Confusion over Appeal Court certified judgment confirming Abba Kabiru Yusuf elected governor

A certified copy of the Appeal Court judgment on Kano State governorship election has affirmed the victory of Abba Kabiru Yusuf as duly elected Governor of Kano state.

In the fresh revelation as indicated in the written judgement, the Court of Appeal set aside the judgement of the Kano election petition tribunal for lacking in merit.

The evidence contained in page 67 of the copy of the Appeal Court judgement released on Tuesday evening and signed by Registrar, Jameel Ibrahim Umar, upheld the victory of Abba Kabiru Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as duly elected governor of Kano.

The three-member panel of the Appeal Court, on Friday, November 17, had dismissed the appeal filed by Governor Yusuf on the basis of his membership status.

The appellate court subsequently affirmed Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the March 25 governorship poll in Kano.

Addressing journalists Tuesday evening, Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, said page 67 of the certified copy of the judgement clearly indicated that the tribunal’s ruling that sacked Governor Yusuf was set aside.

Dederi insisted that contrary to what the judges read to the public in the courtroom on November 17, the written evidence has vindicated Yusuf as the legitimate governor of Kano.

It could be recalled that the national leadership of NNPP had cried out earlier yesterday over the inability of the Appeal Court to provide them with certified true copy of the judgment four days after delivery.

As a result, the court has exposed itself by providing a confusing judgment different from what was read during the delivery of the judgement last Friday in Abuja.

Kano had witnessed a mammoth crowd on Monday when the governor made his first public appearance in the state’s ancient city on arrival from Abuja.

Despite the two unfavourable judgments in a row, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf did not relent in his efforts to deliver dividend of democracy as he commissioned new projects and programmes that have direct bearing with need and aspirations on Kano citizens.

The governor was received by a mammoth crowd making the city to standstill for hours as he made his public appearance to commission the remodelled Accident and Emergency section of Murtala Muhammad Specialist.

The governor had also lined up other activities of project supervisions after the commissioning, but the surging crowd could not allow him to proceed as residents came out in their thousands to give him a rousing welcome and pray that he remains as governor till the end of his second tenure in 2031.
