Instinct pictures unveils ‘Sour Grapes: The musical’ to address postpartum depression, social challenges


A renowned production company in Lagos, Instinct Pictures, is set to present
‘Sour Grapes: The Musical’, a stage play adaption of Yetunde Lemboye’s book titled ‘Sour Grapes’.

The groundbreaking production explores the complexities of societal challenges and focuses on themes such as postpartum depression, child abuse, and sexual abuse.

The creative team, including directors Oladele Samuel and Taiwo Oluyomi, creative directors; Kehinde Oretimehin, music director/composer; Samuel Ogundiji, music producer; Chiamaka Eze, playwright; and Emmanuel Okocha, producer, aimed to bring these delicate issues to the forefront of public conversations. Through powerful storytelling and original music, they crafted a narrative that delves into the struggles faced by mothers dealing with postpartum depression and other related challenges.

“The rehearsal process for ‘Sour Grapes: The Musical’ was filled with both challenges and memorable moments,” says Director, Oladele Samuel, explaining the preparation for the production

“The creative team navigated the emotional depth of the storyline, ensuring authenticity in the portrayal of characters. Memorable moments included the dedication of the cast and the collaborative energy that infused life into the production.”

He further revealed that the cast, including notable actors such as Oluchi Odii, Floyd Igbo, Susan Ajibade, and Seyi Crown Shomoye, prepared for their roles by immersing themselves in the emotional journey of their characters. Drawing from personal experiences and connecting with the theme of postpartum depression, the actors brought a unique and authentic dynamic to the set. Their diverse backgrounds in Nigerian musical theatre enriched the portrayal, adding an element of authenticity.

The play aims to convey a message of awareness about postpartum depression and the crucial need for love and support within communities. The creators hope to emotionally move the audience and engage them in essential conversations about mental health and well-being.

“Throughout the production, unexpected twists and heartwarming moments occurred behind the scenes. From impromptu musical collaborations to the cast bonding over shared experiences, these anecdotes added depth and richness to the creative process,” Taiwo Oluyomi, another director of the production, added.

‘Sour Grapes: The Musical’ contributes significantly to the genre by addressing societal challenges using a unique blend of storytelling and music. Taking the stage at the Lagos Fringe on November 25 and 26, the play holds immense significance, providing a platform to spotlight societal issues, contribute to cultural enrichment, and showcase the depth of talent within the Lagos artistic community.

The collaboration among the director, writers, and actors was pivotal to its success. Resonating with current societal themes, it addresses the pressing issue of postpartum depression, contributing to the ongoing conversation about mental health, love, and support. The play’s relevance and impact make it an important contribution to today’s cultural landscape.

According to recent statistics, worldwide, 10 per cent of pregnant women and 13 per cent of women who have just given birth experience a mental disorder, primarily depression. In developing countries, this percentage is even higher, standing at 15.6 per cent during pregnancy and 19.8 per cent after childbirth. The production sheds light on the severity of such disorders, their impact on mothers, and subsequently on children’s growth and development.
