House of Representatives’ Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has queried the Federal Ministry of Water Resources for reportedly sinking a unit of borehole in the range of N25 million.
Members of the panel, who are investigating Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 intervention funds from 2020-2022, described the expenditure as unacceptable.
They also picked holes in the N4 billion reportedly spent by the ministry on recruitment of 100 personnel for three months under a project known as Youth Engagement for Sanitation (YES) across the nation’s 774 councils.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, had told the committee that boreholes were sunk in some locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Her words: “In total, 299 new water schemes were embarked upon during the period, just as a total of 188 rehabilitations were also undertaken. Each state of the federation received N10 million intervention items.”
The committee chairman, Bamidele Salam, announced the states to be visited for physical verification to include: Osun and Ogun in South West; Akwa Ibom and Edo in South South; Imo and Ebonyi in South East; Kwara, Nasarawa and Benue in North Central; Katsina and Sokoto in North West, as well as Bauchi and Adamawa in North East.
