Stakeholders pledge commitment to end gender-based violence in Edo


Stakeholders in the fight against Gender-Based Violence advocated for synergy among Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) towards fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for women and girls in Edo State.

The stakeholders equally pledged their commitments to preventing violence against women and girls in the state.

Speaking in Benin City at an event commemorating the 16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls sponsored by the EU-ACT/British Council in collaboration with SAFI and MSDGI, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Barbara Osobajo said the Governor Godwin Obaseki led government is committed to ensuring a world free from violence against women and girls in the state.

Osobajo, who charged stakeholders on commitment in combating Gender-Based Violence added that all hands must be on deck in fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for women and girls in Edo State.

“Together, we will work towards tangible measures that address these gaps, fostering a safer and more inclusive environment for women and girls in Edo State.

“Let us engage in open dialogue, share insights, and inspire actionable solutions that will contribute to the broader movement of creating a world free from violence.” Osobajo said.

On his part, EU-ACT Programme State Focal Person in Edo State, Mr. Newton Otsemaye said the EU-ACT programme was a four-year programme managed by the British Council and supported by the European Union (EU).

He said the programme has effectively addressed GBV particularly in the constitution of Edo State Policy Think Tank as well as collation of data on Gender-based violence issues in Edo state.

Executive Director, Society for Awareness and Family Initiative (SAFI), Mr. Abraham Inosezilo who emphasized the role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the campaign against Gender Based Violence in Edo State, called for synergy among the CSOs in the fight against GBV saying collaboration is key in reducing the menace.

Among the stakeholders who attended the 16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls sponsored by the EU-ACT/British Council in collaboration with SAFI and MSDGI, include the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Damkwara, represented by the Officer In Charge of Gender/Family Unit, CSP. Judith Ojemeke.

Others are PCC Comptroller Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Edo state Command, Mr. Uba Waziri, represented by Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, Precious Udoh and representative of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who pledged their support in reducing Gender Based Violence in Edo State.
