Sunshine Stars’ ball boy was shot, players and officials were seriously injured as suspected gunmen attacked the club’s team bus on Thursday, December 7, 2023.

The Akure-based club confirmed the incident on their X handle.

It was gathered that the attack occurred along the Benin-Ore expressway as the team was heading to Edo State for this weekend’s matchday 13 league clash with Insurance of Benin.

“It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers, that our team was attacked along the Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an elite league tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend,” Sunshine Stars wrote on their handle.

“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack; our Team Manager and other club officials including players, are seriously injured.

The club reported that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had to intervene to rescue injured officials and transport them to a nearby hospital.
