‘144,910 cases pending in Federal High Courts’ 


CJ underscores independence, sacredness of judiciary  

Chief Judge (CJ) of Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, yesterday, disclosed that a total of 12,025 cases were disposed of during last legal year, with a total of 144,019 cases pending.

The CJ made the disclosure at a special court session to mark the new legal year and its 50th anniversary. According to the CJ, a total of 142,755 cases were pending at the end of the 2021/2022 legal year and carried over to the 2022/2023 legal year, stating that a total 15,025 cases were filed, while 12,870 were disposed of.

Tshoho said that with the addition of  142,755 to 2,155, the court now has pending cases of 144,910 cases in the last legal year, made up of 42,784 civil cases; 36,061 criminal cases;41,447 motions and 24,784 civil cases.   The CJ, who revealed that the judiciary was facing difficult times, and that it behooves on critical stakeholders of the institution to ensure that they uphold the independence and sacredness of the judiciary.

which is a hallowed temple of justice. The CJ recalled that the court, which started in Lagos with one court and five judges, now has 38 judicial divisions with 95 judges.
