Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, yesterday, charged residents of the state to maintain a clean environment during and after Yuletide.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement, said it was important to remind residents to show more love towards the environment as they celebrate.

Wahab, who felicitated with residents for witnessing another Yuletide, urged them to value the environment and ensure that wastes generated during Christmas and New Year celebrations are properly disposed of.

“I will like to urge residents to maintain a clean, safe and sustainable environment always because if you continue to harm the environment through improper waste disposal, it will come back to you through flooding,” he warned.

He said to prevent spread of diseases, wastes generated during the period must be properly disposed of, well bagged, and placed at the appropriate places for waste management officials to pick them up.

Wahab assured residents that because of the increased waste envisaged at the season, the combined efforts of the Ministry of Environment and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) would go a long way in reducing refuse heaps.

He added that the government is determined to be proactive in sensitising residents against indiscriminate waste disposal and highlighting the importance of a sustainable environment.
