Rivers seeks domestication of startup Act

Former president Muhammadu Buhari

Following the passage of the Nigeria Startup Act in 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Rivers State government said efforts are being made to domesticate the Act.

The Act, which sought to establish an institutional framework that nurtures tech entrepreneurs, fostering economic development, will, as well, create a conducive environment for growth and prosperity of technology-enabled businesses within the state.

Speaking at a two-day workshop on modalities of the Bill, in Port Harcourt, with the theme, ‘Empowering Rivers-based to Thrive,’ Fenibo Fubara, who is the Special Assistant on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, noted that the state aims at building a vibrant ecosystem that not only attracts investment, but also nurtures local talent. According to him, this would help create a pool of skilled individuals, who would contribute meaningfully to the global digital economy.

Fubara noted that the essence of the meeting with stakeholders was to get the input of stakeholders from different backgrounds on how the bill will be domesticated in the state. According to him, the bill will ensure that there are clear laws and regulations for the tech ecosystem.

He expressed optimism that the bill will contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for growth, attraction, and protection of investment in tech startups in the state.
