The police in Lagos State, yesterday, confirmed that two brothers drowned at Ibeshe Beach on Christmas Day.
Spokesperson for the command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Benjamin Hundeyin, said the incident happened at about 6:00 p.m., while the brothers were swimming with friends.
Hundeyin said the brothers, surnamed Adegboyega, were aged 26 and 23, and that the family lived in Festac Town.
He said all efforts by the friends and local divers to rescue them proved abortive. Thereafter, the incident was reported to the police.
Hundeyin said police detectives visited the scene and local divers were employed to locate the bodies, while the family of the deceased was informed of the tragedy.
ALSO, the command praised residents for the peace witnessed in the state during Christmas and Boxing Day celebrations.
It said citizens’ support has made the state the most peaceful in Nigeria, and called for sustenance of the peace during the new year celebration and beyond.
Hundeyin noted that before the celebrations, Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Adegoke Fayoade, had directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders, and Intelligence Officers to deploy adequate human and operational resources to strategic points across the state to forestall any breach of security.
He was said to have charged officers to be professional and courteous but firm in the discharge of their duties, adding that the command was happy no major incident was recorded.
“Lagos has always been the safest state in the country, it was safe and secure last year, and it is still safe and secure, this year. We want to urge Lagosians to stay safe, be security conscious, and say something when they see something.
“CP Fayoade, therefore, gives assurances that the emplaced security architecture will be closely monitored and reviewed as required, in a bid to sustain the existing peace in Lagos State.
“The command equally enjoins everyone to be security conscious and vigilant, and encourages them to report any untoward incident or happening to the nearest police station or call the command’s control room.
In another development, Hundeyin lauded a female DPO, in charge of Alausa, Chief Superintendent of Police Elizabeth Opadola, for her dedication.
He said: “One DPO who gave me zero PR problems in the outgoing year is CSP Elizabeth Opadola, DPO Alausa. Thank you. Your firm grip on your division and personnel has been highly productive. Your professionalism is second to none.”
