Exercise caution in implementing accord with Wike, NADECO urges Fubara
Rivers Arewa leader urges FG, Wike to allow Fubara fulfill his mandate
Nigeria’s pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), United States of America (USA), has urged Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to exercise caution in the implementation of the peace accord entered with his predecessor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
It insisted that the recent truce over the political crisis between the governor and Wike portends a bleak political and economic future for the state.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, Publicity Secretary of the group, David Adenakan, noted that it was regrettable that certain political actors were unwittingly beating a drum of crisis capable of grounding Rivers and Nigeria in general.
NADECO, while reacting to the development, stated that the crisis in Rivers State transcends tribal and ethnic divides.
The group said: “The conflict revolves around the people of Rivers State uniting against perceived tyranny of one individual who sees himself as an emperor. This struggle is a battle between good and evil, democracy versus anti-democratic forces, and the pursuit of good governance against political machinations.
“Fubara’s willingness to engage with the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) raises concerns about his independence, and the sincerity of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) internal conflict resolution efforts. Literally, it is as if Fubara willingly presented his neck on the chopping board for Wike, Tinubu and APC to chop off.
The group stressed that the people of Rivers must stand united. It said that the proposed agreement should be rejected, considering that the governor serves the interest of the state, and not that of Wike or Tinubu.
IN the same vein, the leader of Arewa Initiative for Peaceful Co-existence in Southern Nigeria, Musa Saidu, has called on the Federal Government and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allow the Rivers State Governor to deliver on his constitutional mandate to the people.
The Arewa leader, who spoke in Port Harcourt, noted that it would amount to illegality if the governor takes actions that are not guided by law, adding that the Federal Government must follow the rule of law in addressing the crisis in the state.
