The residents, on Monday morning, woke up to find that the transformer, located at Elechi/Wokom Street, had been tampered with.

A source said the vandals, who were armed, arrived in a Hilux vehicle at about 3:30 a.m.

According to a resident, Stephen Rowland, four of the men operated on the transformer, while two others stood at the fence with guns, providing cover for them.

“So, we are not able to do anything, as nobody would go and fight someone that is holding a gun. They took the armoured cable; anything they knew was valuable, that would give them money. The only thing left, which they did not take, was the shell.

“We have not reported to the police but we have reported to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED),” he explained.

When The Guardian visited the scene, it noticed the hoodlums had broken the concrete structure used for covering the armoured cables, while several cut cables were strewn around.
