Why Adenomyosis is mistaken for fibroid, expert explains

The Managing Director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Dr Abayomi Ajayi, has said that many who had adenomyosis is often suspected and treated for fibroid, simply because both symptoms are alike.

According to him, before now it was very difficult to diagnose it but that is changing now with the availability of better scanners, especially Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines.

Ajayi added that adenomyosis which is common in women over 40 years comes with severe pains during menstrual period, noting that adenomyosis affects the quality of life of women due to the pains from the ailment.

He further said that a lot of cases of adenomyosis are being recorded from women who attend fertility clinic. According to him, while it is possible to do surgery to treat adenomyosis but because it is wide spread and might end up affecting the uterus reason it is usually advised that surgery is not a better option.

He also said that it is why women are told to see High-intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) as an option to treating adenomyosis.

Ajdayi further stated that a woman who wants to get pregnant and has adenomyosis, taking drugs to treat it is also not an option as it could affect the fertility process, though drugs can be used to reduce the inflammation.
