It was a tragic Sunday for many residents of Lafenwa, Itele-ota in Ado-odo-ota Local Council of Ogun State following the destruction of their houses and property by rain storm.

The residents who have been praying for rain due to hot weather and its effect on their crops for the past weeks got more than they bargained for, yesterday, when the heavens opened up with a heavy downpour that lasted for over two hours.

Consequently, many buildings in the community were flooded, while rooftops of most houses were destroyed by the accompanying wind storm.

One of the affected victims, Tunji Kolawole said the rain started at about 1:00 p.m. with a very fierce wind, which ended with drizzles, leaving many damaged property in its trail.

Kolawole said the rain storm also affected farmlands, while many homes were flooded.

Another victim, Rilwan Adetunji said the rain opened up the roof of his house, thereby exposing all his property to the rain.

He lamented that he will not be able to repair the roof considering the present economic situation in the country.

He also complained that his house was filled with water.

Another victim, Lukman Aremu, whose house was water-logged in Lafenwa, said the rains also brought down fences and gates, including his own.

According to him, this will expose residents to the risk of insecurity, which will give burglars and thieves the opportunity to loot belongings and other valuables in the community.

But a resident, who owns a fashion shop in the area, Miss Damilola Ojugbele, blamed the misfortune on lack of proper drainage system in the area.

She called on the Ogun State government to build a good drainage system in Lafenwa, Itele-ota Community to avert more disasters.
