Niger group, others oppose planned national protest

State govt dismisses existence of demonstrations

Concerned Nigerlites Organisation, in collaboration with Bola Ahmed Tinubu Support organisation, National Youth Council of Nigeria and others, has opposed the planned national protest, noting that it is not solution to the socio-political and economic crises bedeviling the country.

It explained that the exercise, in whatever form, could be hijacked by mischievous elements to worsen prevailing insecurity.

The convener, Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi Kuso, at a press conference in Minna, said the organisation, with a membership strength of about 75,000 across the federation, believes in one Nigeria without recourse to tribalism, religion and political differences.

He argued that the proposed protest would not only aggravate the current hardship in the country, but also promote misery and uncertainty among innocent citizens, as banks, hospitals, markets, motor parks and other critical areas would remain shut, with the poor bearing the most of the brunt.

Kuso added: “We say no to protest, we can never put our people in more hardship because there is hardship in the land. We will rather pray, support and offer meaningful solutions to our leaders with the belief that the hardship will come to pass.”

He urged stakeholders and well-meaning citizens to shelve any plan for protest now or in the future, and allow President Bola Tinubu to continue working towards alleviating the hardship faced by Nigerians.

In their separate remarks, Director-General of NGOs in Niger State, Dr. Zubairu Bala Kuta, and representative of NYCN, Abdullahi Wahab Adamu, advised the people to shun the planned protest, assuring that the people of the state acknowledge the performance of the federal and state governments, and would not partake in the exercise.

HOWEVER, the state government has dismissed recent online reports claiming that protests had begun on the Abuja-Kaduna Road in Niger.

A statement by Special Adviser on Print Media to Governor Umaru Bago, Aisha Wakaso, refuted the speculations.

Also, Chairman of Suleja Local Council, Ishaku Bawa Naibi, confirmed that no protests occurred in his jurisdiction.

Security reports from the area equally corroborate the statement, indicating that there have been no disruptions or demonstrations in the state.

The statement enjoined all law-abiding citizens to continue going about their legitimate business without fear of harassment or intimidation.

It restated government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all residents.

Recall that the decision not to engage in protests in the state was collectively made by stakeholders during a recent town hall meeting, reflecting the community’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability.

It reassured that the Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago administration will continue to prioritise initiatives that alleviate economic challenges and improve the quality of life of the people.

It urged the media to report accurately, avoiding any attempt to incite unrest or create unnecessary fear among the populace, but rather support government’s efforts to foster an environment of peace and progress.
