Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi’s timeless vision at Penang State Art Gallery

The Penang State Art Gallery has become a beacon for artistic expression this spring with its captivating exhibition titled ‘Masa-Kita, Our Time.’

Running from April 16 to July 22, the exhibition offers a vivid exploration of the concept of time through the eyes of 96 various talented artists across Malaysia.

Among the diverse voices showcased is Nigerian-born, Malaysian-based academic and artist Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi, whose work is a standout in this vibrant assembly.

Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi is no stranger to the art world. A protege of the impressionism-expressionism classical school, Adewumi has carved a unique niche for himself with his distinctive style that melds emotional depth and cultural narrative. His piece at the ‘Masa-Kita, Our Time’ exhibition, titled ‘A Ride in Time’, encapsulates the daily life and energy of Penang’s iconic rickshaw riders, juxtaposed with the exhilarating experiences of the tourists who journey through the city’s bustling streets.

This evocative portrayal is not just a visual feast but a reflection on the different facets of human experience — the grind of daily survival and the pursuit of joyful adventure.

In ‘A Ride in Time’, Adewumi employs the use of oil colour on a self-prepared canvass, his versatile approach highlights not just the physical landscapes of Penang but also the vibrant spirit of its people and visitors. His depiction of the rickshaw riders is poignant; these men and women, seen as the lifeblood of Penang’s tourism, symbolise resilience and the promise of livelihood with each ride they offer. For the tourists, the rickshaw ride is more than just a mode of transportation; it is a memorable experience etched into their journey of happiness and exploration.

Adewumi’s work does not stop at this exhibition. His impressive portfolio includes figure drawing, still life, portraiture, and more. In 2022, his abstract painting Dusk on Penang Hill garnered significant acclaim when it won third place in the Setia Spice Amari Hotel Art Contest, outshining over 400 other entries.

This recognition was further amplified when he was commissioned to create a large 40 by 140-inch abstract painting in just six minutes, a live performance that enthralled guests during the hotel’s opening ceremony and prize-giving event. This dynamic engagement showcased not only his technical prowess but also his ability to captivate and connect with audiences.

Beyond the current exhibition, Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi has made substantial contributions to the Penang art scene through numerous group exhibitions and a notable two-man show at the prestigious Muzium and Gallery Tuanku Fauziyah, Universiti Sains Malaysia. In this show, he exhibited alongside Pakistani artist, Fatima Siddiqie, creating a cross-cultural dialogue that enriched the Malaysian art landscape.

Adewumi’s journey from Nigeria to Malaysia is not just a geographical transition but a melding of diverse cultural influences that inform his art. His work embodies a bridge between different worlds, offering insights that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. At the ‘Masa-Kita, Our Time’ exhibition, his portrayal of Penang through the lenses of time and human interaction invites viewers to contemplate their own journeys and experiences.

As the exhibition draws to a close, Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi’s contributions leave a lasting impact. His ability to intertwine narrative and emotion with technical skill makes his work not just a visual delight but a profound commentary on the human condition. The Penang State Art Gallery, has given a stage to voices like Suleiman’s, ensuring that their stories and visions continue to inspire and resonate.

For those fortunate enough to witness A Ride in Time, it is clear that, Suleiman Abdullahi Adewumi is an artist who masterfully captures the essence of life’s fleeting moments.
