The Rivers State Police Command has expressed concern over the escalatingc#EndBadGovernance protest in the state. The command said it observed a disturbing trend despite initial assurances of peaceful demonstrations within designated areas.
According to the police, the protest has become increasingly disorganised, with no clear leadership or coordination among participating groups. The police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the breakdown had deteriorated order, prompting the command to issue a warning.
Iringe-Koko said the police had initially offered to provide protection and isolate criminal elements, but the lack of leadership has hindered efforts to maintain peace.
She warned that the police will take decisive action against protesters who engage in violent and criminal conduct. She said the police observed that protesters were resorting to unlawful acts, including burning tyres, extortion of motorists, blocking roads, damaging vehicles, harassing business owners and stealing from innocent residents.
Iringe-Koko added that a group had threatened to escalate the protest on August 7, calling traders and motorists to stay home or join the protest. She said: “The police will act decisively to arrest and prosecute any individual who attempts to infringe on the rights of others or engage in criminal activities under the guise of the protest. The police will take necessary and decisive action immediately if the protest stops being peaceful.
“The police advise that protesters remain in the designated areas: Pleasure Park and Abali Park. They should refrain from disrupting the free movement of citizens or engaging in any unlawful activities.
“The command is committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents during this period.”
