Report ranks Lagos in top 10 ‘most dangerous city’ for tourists

Just behind Caracas in Venezuela, Karachi in Pakistan, and Yangon in Burma, Lagos, a commercial city in Nigeria, has ranked fourth among the 10 most risky cities in the world for tourists, and Africa’s top most dangerous city for travel enthusiasts.

A global platform aimed at assisting customers in selecting the most advantageous financial options for their business, investments, technology, and travel, Forbes Advisor compared 60 destinations worldwide across seven metrics to determine which cities are the most and least risky for tourists.

These metrics are travel safety, crime risk, personal security risk, health security risk, infrastructure security risk, natural disaster risk, and digital security risk.

Safety being an important aspect of travel, the research findings reveal that Lagos had a risk score of 91.54 out of 100.
Its frontrunners on the list include Caracas, with a risk score of 100 out of 100; Karachi, with a score of 93.12 and Yangon, possessing a score of 91.67.

Compared to other cities internationally, Lagos had the highest infrastructure security risk, second highest health security risk, second highest personal security risk, fifth highest crime risk and eleventh highest digital security risk.

Infrastructure security risk reflected the availability and quality of city infrastructure; health security risk reflected the low level and quality of healthcare services and infrastructure; and digital security risk reflected the ability of citizens to freely use the internet without fear of privacy violations, identity theft, and online attacks.

Miles apart, Singapore ranked as the safest city for tourists with a zero-risk score. Tokyo came behind with 10.72, followed by Toronto with 13.6 and Sydney with a score of 22.28.

Having a low possible risk across all metrics assessed, Singapore’s excellent safety rating was largely due to its well-known and effective healthcare system, robust infrastructure, low risk of natural disasters and excellent digital security.
