Maintaining healthy habits —especially our eating habits—is essential for overall well-being, even during times when everything seems overly expensive. When inflation skyrockets and a busy schedule hits, there is every tendency for people to struggle with maintaining healthy habits.

Despite these challenges, it is important to focus on nutrition to prevent diseases like cholera and other health issues. One cannot afford to eat food that will cause more harm than good to the system.

As we enter the second half of the year, it’s a great opportunity to restart and recommit to our fitness and health goals. Here are five crucial habits to cultivate for a healthier life:

1. Reduce intake of processed foods

Reducing your intake of processed foods is a significant step towards better health. Instead of reaching for processed foods, prioritise whole foods like vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These foods provide essential nutrients without added sugars and unhealthy fats.

2. Eat more fruits and vegetables

At Guardian Life, we live by the lesson of eating fruits and vegetables in season. They’re affordable, easy to find, and provide essential nutrients the body needs in that period. Incorporate a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables into your diet to ensure a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Seasonal fruits like bananas and mangoes are excellent choices. Opt for these instead of sugary beverages to boost your nutrient intake.

3. Reduce sugars and unhealthy fats

Limit your consumption of sugary beverages and processed foods that can contain unhealthy fats. Instead, go for natural sources of sweetness and healthy fats, like avocados and olive oil. This shift will help you avoid empty calories and support your overall health.

4. Drink more water

Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to support bodily functions. Infuse your water with fruits for added flavour, and avoid excessive sugary drinks. Planning balanced meals and snacks ahead of time can help you resist unhealthy fast food options. However, staying hydrated also helps to maintain body balance.

5. Incorporate regular exercise and quality sleep

Regular exercise complements a healthy diet by improving metabolism, cardiovascular health, and mood. Find ways to exercise regularly, as this helps to detect underlying health issues early. Quality sleep is also essential for good health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to regulate your hormones and support overall health.

By adopting these habits, you can enhance your health and well-being. Start small and gradually incorporate these practices into your daily routine for long-term benefits. Remember, cultivating healthy eating habits is a journey, not an instant result-oriented destination. It’s okay to practice them occasionally. The key is balance and consistency. Focus on making small, sustainable changes rather than strict restrictions.
