The Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, has canvassed the production of local components of vehicles in Nigeria, stating that there are many vehicles on Nigerian roads where their parts come from overseas.

He stated this on a television programme on TVC monitored by The Guardian in Lagos.

According to him, “The auto sector is a critical industry in every part of the world. Countries like Canada and America have put a 100 per cent tariff on vehicles imported from China. We need to start working on this too to ensure we patronise locally made vehicles.

“Immediately we establish the capacity of these local auto components manufacturers’ products, test them in our test centers, which is our major reason for these facilities to avoid substandard quality, as they won’t be allowed in the country.

“When it comes to after-sales, we have millions of vehicles on Nigerian roads, however, how many of these parts are we producing in Nigeria, and we need to focus on producing local components.

“The Federal Government came up with this Auto policy meant to encourage investment in the Auto sector, promote the market, and generate employment and more,” he said.
