Lagos records 7,536 emergency incidents in six years

Lagos State government has revealed that 7,536 emergency incidents were recorded in the state in the last six years.

The state government revealed this in a statement by the Head, Public Affairs Unit of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor.

“Yearly emergency trends in the last six years of Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu led administration shows that LASEMA has attended to 7,536 incidents. This comprises of 513 incidents between June 1 to December 31, 2019, and 1,043 from January 1 to December 31, 2020, then 1,743 incidents were recorded in 2021, followed by 1,682 incidents in 2022, and 1,461 incidents were recorded in 2023 while 1,094 incidents has been recorded so far between January 1 and August 31, 2024.

The yearly emergency trends data reveals that emergency incidents attained its peak in 2021 with 1,743 incidents, dropped to 1,682 incidents in 2022, then 1,461 incidents in 2023 with more decline as Mr. Governor’s administration continues to equip the agency to meet present day challenges in emergency/disaster management, with incessant trainings, skills and cutting edge technology that is successfully moving Lagos State away from emergency response, to disaster risk reduction in line with international best practices.

Analysis of the 121 emergency incidents attended to in August 2024 by the agency reveals that road accident category rank highest with 39 incidents which comprises of 36 accidents and three breakdowns, followed by the truck/tanker category comprising of 34 incidents made up of 27 accidents, one fallen container, four broken-down trucks, and two fallen truck/tankers. In third place is fire disaster and medical emergencies with both categories comprising of 19 incidents each.

Analysis of the 1,094 incidents recorded from January to August 2024 show that the truck/tanker category ranks highest with 369 incidents in the last eight months. This number is made up of 244 truck accidents, seven fallen containers, 100 broken down trucks, three stuck trucks and 15 fallen truck/tankers.

The road accidents category ranks second highest with 252 incidents, with fire disaster category ranks third with 198 incidents.
