Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the Bayelsa State Government’s decision to award a N45 billion contract for a new Secretariat complex amid economic hardship.

Adeyanju, who made this call on Sunday in Abuja, described the development as extravagant expenditure, insisting that it is unacceptable, especially considering the state’s financial constraints and pressing developmental needs.

He noted: “I urge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to promptly investigate this contract award, ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds. The people of Bayelsa State deserve to know how their resources are being allocated.

“This lavish spending undermines the trust between the government and its citizens. I call on the EFCC to investigate the contract award process for potential irregularities and ensure compliance with public procurement regulations.

“The EFCC must safeguard Nigeria’s financial integrity and hold public officials accountable for their actions.”
