Nine-year-old golfer, Funmilayo Beauty Oyero, became the cynosure of all eyes at the ongoing Asaba 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) yesterday, after clinching a silver medal for Team Lagos in the girls’ singles match, just as Daniel Ibikunle Olumide, representing Ondo State, won the gold medal in the Boys’ 100m.
Oyero displayed impressive skill and composure at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, on Sunday evening.

Her journey to the silver medal was remarkable as she competed against older and more experienced opponents. Oyero played with focus and determination throughout the tournament.

Her performance in the final match earned her a well-deserved place on the podium, making her one of the youngest athletes to achieve such in this year’s National Youth Games. Speaking with journalists after her victory, Oyero said: “I love the game of golf, and my parents are encouraging me.”

Meanwhile, Olumide grabbed the gold medal in the Boys’ 100m final, emerging as the fastest boy at the Games with a time of 11.20 secs.  Adeniji Muyideen Adeola of Ogun State (11.37 secs) and Delta State’s Jacob Olumor, who returned a time of 11.38 secs settled for the second and third positions respectively.

Among top officials who cheered the sprinters at the Stephen Keshi Stadium include athletics legend, Falilat Ogunkoya; former AFN boss and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Solomon Ogba, and former NBA star, now vice president of Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Olumide Oyedeji, who is also the President of Nigeria Athletes Commission (NAC).

In another development, Taraba State won the bronze medal in boys’ cricket by defeating Team Akwa Ibom.
Coach Freeman Njea Godwin described the bronze medal as “joyful” and commended the team for their performance.

Taraba State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Joseph Joshua, said that the state government is determined to identify and support young talents to excel.
