The Kwara State Government has urged its residents to take flood alerts and precautionary measures seriously, particularly those in areas prone to flooding. In a statement released on Tuesday, Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju, emphasised that the government and traditional institutions have been actively working to raise awareness about the dangers of flooding and ways to mitigate its impact.

Olukoju highlighted that various government agencies have conducted several public enlightenment campaigns, including those aired on local radio stations and disseminated through community leaders, educating residents on flood risks and safety measures.

She noted that the government has also desilted many drainages and water passages across the state, particularly in urban areas, while discouraging behaviours that may exacerbate the effects of climate change and rising water levels.

“In riverine communities like Patigi and Edu, as well as other vulnerable areas, our royal fathers have been engaging with residents, urging them to relocate to safer areas already designated for such purposes,” Olukoju said. “We strongly appeal to our people to follow these advisories as the government continues to support them in various ways.”

The statement reaffirmed Kwara State Government’s commitment to long-term solutions, including its ongoing advocacy for the dredging of the River Niger—a permanent measure aimed at addressing the frequent flooding experienced in that region.
