Physiologist strives to shape health professionals into academic maturity

Opeyemi Osuntokun

In academia, the lazy ones are, in most cases, left gnashing their teeth while the outstanding ones receive recognition. This is because recognition is not handed out lightly. It is earned through persistence, innovation, and a record of contributions that shape one’s field. These are contributions whose effects on society are not in doubt.

For Dr. Opeyemi Samson Osuntokun, a physiologist and lecturer whose research spans human physiology, biomedical sciences, and translational neuroscience, accolades have followed naturally from a career dedicated to a seamless blend of research productivity, teaching excellence, and community service.

From his doctoral studies at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where his research on the neuroprotective effects of proanthocyanidins drew attention, to his role as Lecturer in Health and Sport Science at Regent College London affiliated with the University of Greater Manchester, he has maintained a commitment to advancing both knowledge and practice. His funded doctoral project under Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) produced findings that enriched the understanding of seizure-related disorders, memory impairment, and neuro-oxidative stress, reinforcing his standing as a researcher with translational impact.

Osuntokun As the Finest Educator
While serving at the Osun State University between 2015 and 2020, he was consistently recognised as one of the finest educators in the institution. He received awards as Best Lecturer in the Department, Best Lecturer in the Faculty, and ranked Third Best Lecturer in the College of Health Sciences, under the auspices of the institution’s Quality Assurance Department. These honours were not mere ceremonial gestures. They reflected the evaluations of students and peers who consistently attested to his ability to inspire, mentor, and deliver complex physiological concepts with clarity.

Beyond the classroom, Osuntokun’s research achievements have been equally remarkable. His publication record, spanning journals such as Andrologia, Epilepsy and Behavior, Brain Research, Toxicology Reports, and Neuroscience Letters, demonstrates both range and depth. With over thirty-five peer-reviewed papers to his name, he has contributed significantly to understanding drug-induced neurotoxicity, reproductive physiology, and the therapeutic potential of natural compounds such as proanthocyanidins and plant extracts. These works, many of which have been cited globally, have positioned him as a respected voice in biomedical sciences and translational neuroscience.

His reputation is further amplified by his participation in international conferences. He has presented his work at the International Conference on Advanced Pharmacy and Clinical Research in Paris (2022), the West African Research and Innovation Management Conference (2018), and the International Congress of the African Association of Physiological Sciences (2016), among others. These platforms validated his research and connected him with an international network of scholars and practitioners committed to advancing medical science.

Osuntokun’s professional credibility also rests on his service to the scientific community as a reviewer for high-impact journals, including Neurotoxicology, Toxicology Journal, the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines, and the Tropical Journal of Natural Product Research. His role in evaluating and shaping the work of other scientists speaks to the trust placed in his expertise and judgement. He is a consistent reviewer for Neurotoxicology (An Official Journal of International Neurotoxicology Association), Toxicology Journal (Official Journal of German Toxicology Society, Germany), African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines (Official Publication of African Traditional Herbal Medicine Supporters Initiative (ATHMSI), Tropical Journal of Natural Product Research (Official Journal of the Faculty Pharmacy, University of Benin, Nigeria), and Research Journal of Health Sciences (Official Journal of the College of Health Sciences, Osun State University, Nigeria).

His membership of global professional bodies further underscores his standing. He is a member of the Physiological Society, United Kingdom, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society, the Nigerian Society for Neuroscience, the American Physiological Society, and the International Union of Physiological Sciences, among others. These affiliations reflect both his professional engagement and the recognition of his contributions across borders.

Significantly, Osuntokun’s impact is not limited to academia. His service as a Registration Officer during Nigeria’s 2010 national elections in Enugu State, his involvement as a peer education trainer against HIV transmission during his National Youth Service Corps year, and his ongoing church community service in Luton, England, illustrate a life guided by social responsibility and civic engagement.

His achievements, such as teaching awards, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, professional memberships, and community service form a mosaic of excellence that has defined his career. They also underscore his growing reputation as an academic who bridges the gap between laboratory science and societal relevance.

As a Lecturer at Regent College London, he continues to shape the next generation of health professionals, supervise groundbreaking research projects, and mentor students into academic and professional maturity.
