OML focuses on navigating uncertainty via visionary leadership
Ahead of the 40th Omolayole Management Lecture (OML) series, the need for the country and organisations to rethink and reshape their leadership approaches as well as equip members to navigate and excel in the ever-changing environment has been emphasised.
Speaking at a press conference to herald this year’s lecture, President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), Ahmed Gobir, said that in a world characterised by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA), the need for visionary leadership and transformative thinking has never been more crucial.
He said this year’s theme: ‘Developing a Game-Changing Leader’s Mindset for Business Transformation in a VUCA World’, reflected Dr Michael Omolayole’s belief, in whose honour the lecture is held, in adaptive forward-thinking leadership to drive national progress.
The CIPM boss, whose institute is the host for this year’s lecture, said Omolayole’s commitment to people management has seen to the growth of various organisations, even as he continues to inspire leaders to navigate in the rapidly changing environment.
On how the theme relates to Nigeria’s VUCA environment, Gobir said following the country’s volatile and complex environment, as well as the size of its population and many things the county has to deal with, it appeared the country does not have solutions that would bring an end in sight on the myriads of challenges it is faced with.
However, he said the lecture would proffer insights into navigating these uncertainties into driving innovation and harnessing opportunities in challenging times.
The CIPM chief added that the forum would also equip business leaders to anticipate change and make informed decisions to foster agility with their respective work teams.
According to him, it will bring about how to build resilient organisations through adaptive leadership and strategic thinking as often preached by Pa Omolayole, as he is fondly called.
Slated to be held in Lagos on Sept 26, 2024, President of the International Association of Students in Economics and Commercial Sciences (AIESEC), Bunmi Abejirin, pointed out the need to develop a leadership mindset in a VUCA world, especially as the theme reflects the current reality the nation was facing.
She said AIESEC has continued to honour him, especially about his passion for indigenous management and leadership in Nigeria’s commercial sector.
She added that the lecture would come up with a white paper that would be delivered to the presidency on what the OML proffered for the country as a solution to its challenges.
