The recent indictment of Sean “Diddy” Combs has stirred memories of another high-profile case involving musician R. Kelly.

Both of these global music icons are now facing allegations from federal prosecutors in New York City, with a similar pattern in their cases. Diddy’s situation resembles Kelly’s in that both are being prosecuted under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO. The law is used to tackle organised crime, and now it targets these celebrities for allegedly using their fame and influence to commit and cover up crimes.
“There are certainly parallels in these cases,” noted Nadia Shihata, a former federal prosecutor who worked on Kelly’s 2021 trial. “The conduct may differ, but the idea of a superstar using their entourage to facilitate severe sexual violence is common,” she told CNN.

R. Kelly is currently serving a staggering 30 years for racketeering and sex trafficking, alongside another 20 years for child pornography. Meanwhile, Diddy has pleaded not guilty to three charges: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transporting individuals for prostitution. One difference lies in the age of the alleged victims. Kelly’s charges involved minors, while Diddy has not been accused of wrongdoing against anyone underage.
“Regardless, the charges against Diddy are extremely serious,” cautioned civil rights attorney Areva Martin, pointing out the “eerie similarity” to Kelly’s case. Both are music icons facing allegations that could change their lives forever.

Diddy’s business empire is also under scrutiny. The indictment claims Diddy led an enterprise involving numerous employees and businesses, including record labels and a clothing line. Allegations suggest this enterprise facilitated crimes such as sex trafficking and forced labour.
Prosecutors have included incidents like a video-recorded attack on Diddy’s former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, as part of the evidence against him. While Kelly’s victims were primarily underage, Diddy’s alleged victims are adults.

His attorney has claimed that the case revolves around one unnamed victim, while prosecutors assert there are multiple individuals involved.
