
The Government College Lagos, off Eric Moore Road, Surulere will today, September 23, begin its 50th anniversary celebration.
According to the Government College Old Boys Association (GCLOBA) National President, Vice Admiral Leye Jaiyeola (rtd), series of events have been slated to celebrate the golden age of the school this week.
The celebration began with a press briefing on Sunday, where Jaiyeola gave highlights of the events, which will feature the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the special guest to commission various landmark developmental projects implemented by the old boys of the school to uplift the school educational infrastructure.
The projects include a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) facility facilitated by Senator Tokunbo Abiru, furnished with computers and internet-enabled lab powered with fibre optic. The aim is to empower students in the sciences to be trained in innovative skills problem-solving approaches and the design process to answer complex questions, engage in critical thinking, investigate societal issues, and develop solutions for everyday challenges.
Other projects for commissioning are Biology, Chemistry and Physics laboratories, school administration block all fully furnished to taste and sports facilities such as lawn tennis, basketball and badminton courts.
Several other rehabilitation projects were done to uplift the landscape of the school from the school entrance to the school hall, to upgrade it to global educational standards.
Chairman of the occasion for the opening day will be Senator Tokunbo Abiru, an old boy of the school, while Prof. Bankole Sodipo (SAN) will be the speaker.
The weeklong activities began with a thanksgiving service at the Anglican Church at Imam Dauda str yesterday as well as a Jumu’ah prayer on Friday September 27, at Muslim Association of Nigeria (MAN) Mosque, Surulere, Lagos.
Later in the week, there will be a visit to the Atumda Olu & Pacelli school for the blind to donate gifts, tree planting exercises in the school premises, career and mentoring talk, and a gala and award night where past Principals, teachers and notable personalities will be honoured.
The National President reiterated that the vision of the old boys is for the school to continue to be a leading beacon and a flagship among Lagos state-owned schools.
