Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, has cautioned managers of the Universal Basic Education Board and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) against circumvention of due processes.

Aliyu issued this warning on Tuesday in Abuja at a capacity-building workshop for SUBEBS and FCT–UBEB on Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the Management of Basic Education in Nigeria organized by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), the training arm of the commission.

According to be ICPC boss, from enrollment to the provision of textbooks and equipment, appointment and management of teachers, assessment for teaching and learning processes, supervision, monitoring and evaluation of schools, as well as monitoring of projects to execution were without doubt laced with one form of corruption or the other.

He attributed the development to a lack of transparency and accountability, lamenting that it has direct and indirect impacts on access to quality education in the country.

Noting that both interventionist agencies were created to address the inequality in educational opportunities at the basic level and improve the quality of its provision, he reminded the officials that the commission will continue to carry out its key core mandates of enforcement, prevention, public education and mass mobilization within the confines of the law.

He stated: “As patriotic and responsible ones are doing their best to achieve the mandate of the board, the unscrupulous ones are unrelenting in trying to circumvent the system, as stakeholders in the basic education subsector you are expected to be above board, the overall interest and impact of your work on your state and the country at large should override the personal and collective interest of all the boards.

“Your efforts should complement the reforms that government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is bringing on board to the education industry, the causes and consequences of corruption in basic education in Nigeria and the possible control measures the importance of integrity in your buildings, how to implement government projects for sustainable development, as well as how to foster transparency and accountability in your processes are among the various issues that will be discussed at the workshop.

“It is expected that the knowledge you have garnered from this workshop will help you discharge your duties more effectively, so that you do not run foul of the law, but become more transparent and accountable in your dealings.”

On his part, the provost of ACAN, Professor Olatunde Babawale, stated that the purpose of the workshop is to enhance transparency and accountability in the management of education and ensure quality service delivery.
