The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has congratulated Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, on his victory in the Edo State election.

The group described Okpebholo’s win as a testament to the people’s trust in his vision and leadership.

In a statement, signed by the National Coordinator of NDYC, Israel Uwejeyan, the group praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a smooth, transparent, and credible election.

“The electoral process was largely peaceful, thanks to INEC’s efforts and the professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.

“This election has shown that INEC is committed to conducting free and fair elections. We commend the electoral body for its dedication to democracy.”

However, the NDYC criticised the incumbent Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki for undermining the election’s credibility.

They reminded him that INEC was deemed fair during his own election victories and urged him to respect the people’s will, congratulate the winner, and offer support for the state’s benefit.

“It is hypocritical for the governor to question INEC’s credibility now, after benefiting from the same electoral process in the past. We urge him to display statesmanship and acknowledge the people’s choice.”

The NDYC called on all Edo citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding, emphasising unity behind the new leadership to move the state forward.

They stressed that democracy is the true winner of this election, and unity will ensure its continued success.

“Edo State is greater than any individual or party, and it is essential that all stakeholders unite behind the new leadership to move the state forward,” Uwejeyan said.

The NDYC also urged Okpebholo to remain steadfast in his commitment to the development of the state and to govern with integrity, fairness, and inclusivity.

“We expect the incoming administration to prioritise the welfare of Edo people and address the state’s pressing challenges,” Uwejeyan added.
