Training will reduce cancer deaths, says institute

Training and re-training of health workers on early cancer detection and vaccination will reduce rising cases of death and improve chances of survival by patients, according to the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT).

Director General of NICRAT, Usman Malami Aliyu, said, yesterday, at the end of a three-day capacity building workshop, on “cervical cancer screening and referral for primary and secondary health workers”, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebutte Metta, Lagos, said: “Since the inception of this institute a little over a year ago, we have always reiterated our determination to work with all relevant stakeholders to combat and reduce to the barest minimum all forms of cancers in the country. We have always insisted that training and retraining of all categories of health workers across the country is key for us to achieve our target of cancer prevention, control, efficient care and treatment.”

He noted that the theme of the training, “Cervical cancer screening and referral” was carefully chosen.
