Alapere pedestrian bridge reopens after repairs
The Lagos State Government announced yesterday that the pedestrian bridge at the bustling Alapere/Estate Bus Stop on the Third Axial Road has reopened. The bridge, damaged by a container truck earlier this year, has undergone extensive repairs and is now deemed safe.
Olufemi Daramola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, confirmed the reopening following a thorough inspection by government officials and contractors. He emphasised the government’s commitment to public safety, stating that the bridge was reopened immediately upon confirmation of its structural integrity.
“Given the high premium the government places on the safety of lives, we have directed that the bridge be opened immediately for public use,” Daramola said.
He explained that although the official handover and commissioning of the project are still pending, the governor prioritised the safety of pedestrians who were forced to risk crossing the busy expressway due to the bridge’s closure.
The bridge, originally constructed 11 years ago, sustained significant damage when a container truck carrying a load exceeding the bridge’s headroom attempted to pass underneath. This incident disrupted both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, also commented on the reopening, highlighting the government’s responsiveness and commitment to providing high-quality infrastructure for the efficient movement of people and goods.
“This demonstrates the high responsiveness of the Governor and reaffirms the Lagos State Government’s unwavering commitment to making the state work for its citizens,” Omotoso said.
