Tragedy struck again in Plateau State as unidentified gunmen killed five people in Rafut village, Kwatas district, Bokkos Local Council. The attack occurred Monday night, adding to a growing list of violent incidents plaguing the region.
According to reports, the assailants ambushed four young men guarding their family homes, killing them instantly. They then stormed a compound and killed an elderly man before fleeing the scene.
This latest attack was confirmed in a statement by the Bokkos Cultural Development Council yesterday. The statement, jointly signed by the Chairman, Farmasum Fuddang, and Secretary, Duwam Bosco, expressed deep sorrow over the recurring violence.
“With deep sadness, we wish to report that our communities have once again fallen victim to violence,” the statement read. It detailed a series of attacks throughout October and September, resulting in dozens of fatalities across various villages in Bokkos.
The statement highlighted the alarming frequency of these attacks, noting that this latest incident occurred despite a security meeting with police and military authorities held just a day prior.
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council commended the military for its swift action in rescuing a young man, Yelwa Sunday Mashat, who was attacked while riding his motorcycle near Maikatako.
Mashat is currently recovering from severe injuries. The military also apprehended several suspects and recovered a large herd of cattle used to obstruct the victim’s path.
However, the association stressed the urgent need for a civilian task force to complement the military’s efforts. They argued that the absence of such a group has discouraged community members from participating in neighbourhood watch initiatives, fearing potential repercussions from military personnel.
“A joint task force would facilitate better intelligence sharing, eliminate misunderstandings, and significantly reduce response times during future invasions,” the statement asserted.
While acknowledging the military’s crucial role in protecting life and property, the association emphasised the advantages of local involvement.
“Residents possess invaluable knowledge of the terrain and can better support military efforts,” they said.
