Pubic hair removal is a common practice among women, driven by cultural norms, personal preferences, and the desire for a smooth appearance. However, while shaving might seem like the best solution, it might not be the healthiest or most comfortable option. In a discussion with Pharm. Pedro Osemelose, owner of Pedro Pharmacy, he explained to The Guardian Nigeria the health benefits of pubic hair for female genital health and overall well-being. See the reasons why you might want to reconsider shaving your pubic hair completely.

1. Protection against infections

Believe it or not, pubic hair plays a crucial role in protecting your genital area from infections. According to Pharm. Pedro, the pubic hairs act as a natural barrier, preventing harmful bacteria and fungi from entering your body.
He added, “Shaving can disrupt this protective barrier, increasing your risk of infections like folliculitis, yeast infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.” Therefore, to guard against recurrent infections, pubic hair should not be removed completely.

2. Reduced skin irritation and discomfort

Shaving can lead to skin irritation, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs. These uncomfortable conditions can cause itching, redness, and even pain. Additionally, the friction caused by shaving can contribute to discomfort during sexual activity.

3. Natural temperature regulation

Pubic hair helps regulate the temperature in your genital area. It acts as a natural insulator, preventing excessive heat or cold from affecting the delicate skin in this region. Removing pubic hair can disrupt this natural temperature regulation, potentially leading to discomfort or dryness.

4. Enhanced sensory experience

Pubic hair can enhance your sensory experience during sexual activity. It provides gentle stimulation and increases sensitivity, contributing to a more pleasurable encounter. Pharm. Pedro added that men often prefer easy access and may discourage any perceived obstacles. This, according to him, is why some men encourage their partners to have a clean shave. However, it is up to you as a woman to recognize this and make decisions that prioritise your health.

5. Personal preference and body positivity

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to shave your pubic hair is a personal one. It is essential to embrace your body and choose what feels right for you. While societal pressures might encourage hair removal, it’s important to prioritise your comfort, health, and well-being.

If you decide to remove your pubic hair, consider alternative methods like trimming or waxing, which may be less irritating than shaving. Also, seek professional advice on treatments and medications you can use immediately after shaving to prevent bacterial infections from thriving while your genitals are exposed.
