Five arrested as vigilantes allegedly beat man to death in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested five individuals, including two local vigilantes, for allegedly beating and torturing a 46-year-old political science graduate of the University of Ilorin to death.

The Guardian reliably learnt that the incident, which occurred at Ita-Elepa in Ilorin West Local Council, also led to the arrest of a community leader and two others.

According to sources, the deceased, identified as Lanre Adebayo, was allegedly attacked with machetes on Monday night while returning home from an outing. The vigilantes reportedly stopped him and, dissatisfied with his reason for being out late, engaged him in an argument that escalated.

The source revealed: “Adebayo was stopped by the local security men around 10:00 p.m., and an argument ensued, which eventually led to his death.” Confirming the incident, the State Police Command stated that five suspects had been arrested in connection with the murder. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ‘Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the arrests were made after a police patrol team arrived.

Ejire-Adeyemi said: “Yes, we are aware of the incident. We have arrested five suspects in connection with the crime, and they were transferred to the State CID on Wednesday night.” She further disclosed that investigations have commenced, and updates will be provided to the press.

“It was only yesterday (Wednesday) that I was informed of the situation, and after verifying the facts, I confirmed that the suspects had been detained. Proper investigations will begin today,” she added.
