The police in Kano have declared their position on the Federal High Court judgment regarding the local government election in the state.

According to the command, the police will strictly adhere to item 9 of Justice Simon Amobeda’s verdict, which directed security operatives, including the police, not to participate in the council poll.

In a recorded video clip posted on the official police WhatsApp platform, the spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said no officer or men of the command would be deployed to take part in the election.

In the judgment, Justice Amobeda of the Federal High Court restrained the State Independent Electoral Commission from conducting the council poll next Saturday unless and until its leadership is legally constituted.

The court hence specifically directed the Department of State Services (DSS), police, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) not to participate in the proposed council election.

Kiyawa said, “The position of the law is very clear. Section 4 of the Police Act 2020 (as amended) provides the responsibility of the police force, which is the protection of life and property. And of course, you are very much aware of the court order received by the police command in Kano.

“Item 9 of the order provided that the police should not participate in the local government election in Kano. By this judgment, the police are not participating in the election. However, it is our responsibility to ensure no breakdown of law and order in the state, and we are very alive to our duties.

“The State Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo, has already directed all the command’s operational commanders to ensure the protection of life and property in the state, as well as directed round-the-clock visibility to protect all the inhabitants of the state.”
