Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has sworn in the 44 newly elected council chairmen, urging them to manage their resources prudently and fast-track development at the grassroots.

The chairmen, all from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), won seats in the weekend’s election conducted by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

Yusuf emphasised the importance of prudence in governance to achieve the desired objectives of providing democracy dividends at the grassroots.

Among the elected is a young woman, Sa’adatu Yushau Tudunwada.

She was elected chairperson of Tudunwada Local Council and the sole female candidate, representing Tudun Wada council area.

The Attorney General, Haruna Isa Dederi, administered the oath of office to the new council bosses.

KANSIEC Chairman, Prof Sani Lawal Malumfashi, had presented certificates of return to the officials, certifying them as legitimate leaders of their respective councils.

Six political parties, AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM and NNPP participated in the poll.

On Friday, the Kano State High Court authorised KANSIEC to proceed with the election, nullifying attempts by political parties to stop the exercise.

Justice Sanusi Ma’aji, who presided over the case, ruled that KANSIEC is empowered by the Constitution to conduct, supervise, and oversee local government elections across the 44 local government areas (LGAs) in Kano State.

The case was brought by KANSIEC against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 13 other political parties.
