Motorists using Iwo Road in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to address a deteriorating section beneath the Iwo Road Flyover, which has caused severe traffic congestion over the past month.

Commuters report that an underground drainage channel, which should direct water across the road, has become blocked by refuse and sand, causing water to overflow onto the road and worsen the traffic situation.

A motorist speaking with The Guardian highlighted the issue, explaining that traders frequently dump waste into the channel. “This blockage has led to waterlogging, which weakened the road until it caved in and created the current traffic gridlock,” he said.

He urged the governor to intervene as the congestion continues to escalate daily. Another motorist, who wished to remain anonymous, suggested that Makinde enforce stricter measures, as done by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, to prevent dumping of refuse in drainage channels.

“What we’re witnessing here is mainly due to human error. Traffic under the Iwo Road Flyover now takes 30 to 40 minutes due to this bad section,” he said, adding that the poor road conditions lead to frequent vehicle repairs.

Motorists hope the government will act swiftly to restore smooth traffic flow and ensure long-term maintenance of the area’s drainage system.
