New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has said its 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and another chieftain, Buba Galadima, can no longer speak on behalf of the party, as they remain expelled.

According to the party, the decision comes after the Abia State High Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hand over the party’s management to its Board of Trustees (BOT).

Speaking yesterday, in Lagos, Founder and life member of the NNPP’s Board of Trustees, Dr Aniebonam Okechukwu, noted that Kwankwaso and Galadima were expelled from the party before the judgment and were now leading the Kwankwassiya group.

This group, according to Okechukwu, is distinct from NNPP and has been spreading misinformation through media outlets.  The party’s founder expressed disappointment and sadness over the alleged betrayal of trust by Kwankwaso and Galadima, describing them as “men” deceived by fake marabouts.

He criticised Kwankwaso’s legal adviser, Robert Hon, and Kwankwassiya spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, for their alleged misleading statements. Okechukwu stressed that the court’s compelling order was for INEC to exercise its authority in regulating political parties and that Kwankwaso and Galadima’s actions amounted to contempt of court.

The party had advised Kwankwaso and Galadima to approach the appeal court instead of making misleading statements, adding that the NNPP’s Board of Trustees was set to meet on November 8, 2024, to make decisions following the court judgment.

Okechukwu urged party members to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasising that victory would be achieved without resorting to violence.  He invited elected senators and House of Representatives members under the NNPP to join him in Lagos to reclaim the party.

He said: “ First, it is important to note that the party is now safely in the hands if its BOT and so characters like Senator Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, Ladipo Johnson, long expelled from the party before the judgment, cannot speak for NNPP, but for their kwankwassiya group, which was part of us before the 2023 election but have long exited after the election as we have repeatedly explained to the media people in the past.”
