Tinubu, Sisi, other world leaders congratulate Trump
World leaders from various countries have expressed congratulations to Donald Trump on his stunning victory in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election, signalling hopes for stronger international relations and partnerships under his leadership.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations, emphasizing the potential for a renewed U.S.-Nigeria relationship. In a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing diplomatic and economic ties with the United States. He expressed optimism for joint efforts to address global challenges.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi praised Trump’s victory, hoping it would bring peace to the Middle East. He expressed eagerness to strengthen Egypt-U.S. relations in the pursuit of regional stability.
“I wish him all the success… and I look forward to reaching peace together, upholding regional stability and strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States and their friendly peoples,” Sisi said on X.
President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea congratulated Trump, emphasizing the hope that the ROK-U.S. alliance would become stronger under his leadership. The two countries have long shared security interests, and Yoon anticipates closer collaboration moving forward.
“Under your strong leadership, the future of the ROK-U.S. alliance and America will shine brighter. Look forward to working closely with you,” Yoon posted on X, referring to South Korea by its official acronym.
China called for “peaceful coexistence” with the United States, maintaining its traditional stance of mutual respect in diplomatic relations. Chinese officials have not commented directly on Trump’s re-election but have expressed a consistent approach to U.S.-China relations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to Trump’s victory as “history’s greatest comeback.” He expressed anticipation for a strengthened U.S.-Israel alliance, particularly at a time when Israel is embroiled in military conflicts. Other Israeli officials also praised Trump, looking forward to cooperation in securing the Middle East.
“Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!” Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his office.
Other Israeli officials also congratulated Trump, including Israel Katz who was named defence minister on Tuesday.”Congratulations to President-elect @realDonald Trump on his historic victory. Together, we’ll strengthen the US-Israel alliance, bring back the hostages, and stand firm to defeat the axis of evil led by Iran,” Katz said on X.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz congratulated Trump, noting that Germany and the U.S. have long collaborated on promoting prosperity and freedom. Scholz emphasized the importance of continued partnership, especially in the face of global security challenges.
“I congratulate @realDonaldTrump on his election as US President,” Scholz wrote on X, shortly after discussing the vote outcome with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Germany and the USA have long been working together successfully to promote prosperity and freedom on both sides of the Atlantic. We will continue to do so for the benefit of our citizens,” he wrote.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also congratulated Trump and pledged Berlin stood ready to remain “a close and reliable ally” to Washington.
The Kremlin has reserved judgment on Trump’s victory, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia would assess Trump’s presidency based on “concrete steps.” While they have refrained from offering congratulations, Russia has historically seen Trump’s approach as more favourable compared to his predecessors.
“We will draw conclusions based on concrete steps and concrete words,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, adding that he was “not aware of the president’s plans to congratulate Trump on the election”, since the US is an “unfriendly country”.
Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani welcomed Trump’s victory, expressing hope for continued cooperation on regional security and stability, particularly in the Middle East.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump, noting his “impressive victory.” Zelensky expressed hope that Trump’s presidency could bring a “just peace” to the ongoing war in Ukraine, despite concerns over Trump’s stance on U.S. military aid.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey also congratulated his “friend” Donald Trump, expressing hopes for a strengthened Turkey-U.S. relationship and a resolution to ongoing regional crises, including the Palestinian issue and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Hamas, however, criticized Trump’s “blind support” for Israel, which they argue has exacerbated instability in the region, particularly in Gaza.
Leaders across the world are looking ahead to how Trump’s return to the White House will shape global diplomacy, with an emphasis on security, economic collaboration, and regional peace efforts.
