Inspired by the tenacity of Nigerians who navigate daily challenges with unwavering resolve, Ovisa follows its titular character as he confronts a series of comical yet poignant hurdles. With Mann’s keen eye for humour, Ovisa captures both the humour and gravity of a distinctly Nigerian journey, offering a fresh perspective that resonates deeply with audiences. In every scene, Mann brings out the rich, layered experience of Nigerian life, from cultural nuances to the indomitable spirit of its people.
Selected as one of seven winners of the 2024 Accelerate Filmmakers Project, Mann had the opportunity to create Ovisa through the project’s intensive support for emerging filmmakers.
Reflecting on the film’s success, he said, “Ovisa is more than just a film. It’s a celebration of the Nigerian spirit, our resilience, humour, and unique ability to find light even in the toughest of times. Accelerate Film Makers Project and AFRIFF provided the perfect platform to share this story with the world, and I’m beyond grateful for the audience’s response.”
Ovisa marks only the beginning of Mann’s journey as a filmmaker, as he aims to continue creating stories that champion African perspectives with authenticity and humour.
Ovisa and Mann’s remarkable debuts are testaments to the growing diversity and creativity within African cinema, spotlighting the vibrant narratives emerging from Nigeria today.
