
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and APM Terminals successfully contained a fire outbreak on a crane at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, which occurred in the early morning hours.
The fire, which erupted from one of the APM Terminals (APMT) cranes at the Apapa terminal, was quickly extinguished before any damage could spread to other facilities at the port.
According to the terminal operator, there were no injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident, and port operations were not disrupted.
The statement read: “We extend our sincere gratitude to the NPA Management and NPA Fire Service for their prompt assistance in managing the situation. We are pleased to confirm that all personnel are safe, with no injuries or fatalities reported.
“The safety of our employees, partners, and the surrounding community is our top priority, and we are proud that our stringent safety measures played a critical role in preventing any harm. Operations at the terminal have not been disrupted, and we continue to operate as usual.”
The terminal further stated that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
The terminal also expressed appreciation for the support and understanding of stakeholders during this time.
Meanwhile, the NPA Spokesman, Ikechukwu Onyemekara, expressed his gratitude to the NPA fire crew for their professionalism and confirmed that no additional facilities were affected before the fire was contained.
He assured port users and other stakeholders that the NPA would continue to prioritise the safety of lives and property at Nigerian ports, while also enhancing the ease of doing business at the ports.
