Pillz n Poizn embracing individuality, evolving fashion

Fashion has always been that world where people are free to “soro-soke” without needing to open their mouths to speak. Although many factors, like culture, affect our dress sense; it’s safe to say that our choices of clothes, patterns of styling and colour combinations form a lens through which people view our personalities even when unspoken.

Speaking of style being a medium of subtly hinting to the world about your identity, The Glitz Fashion Week 2021 featured a series of amazing designers like Ifeoma Umenyiora, and Eberechukwu George, Afro-Native and Dare Arrays, amongst many others, all of whom ensured that fashion enthusiasts and everyone present at the event had nothing short of a visual banquet at the event.

Labels from both the renowned fashion artisans and budding designers were featured and this ninth edition was loaded with fun-packed activities that not only gave fashion enthusiasts a visual feast but also created a networking and developmental platform for the attendees. With the quality behind the organization of the event, it has indeed earned its place as Ghana’s biggest fashion event. Above all, Umenyiora and George’s collection stood out. The fun-filled collections that were rolled out this season truly exemplify the concept of “The Visible Voice”, giving fashion enthusiasts an unusual, yet classy vibe.

Any happy soul and free-spirited person would delightfully put on the amazing collections showcased by Umenyiora and George, the founders of Pillz n Poizn at the event.

Piillz ‘n Poizn (Ppoizn) Atelier is a fashion label that is known for trendy, yet empowering designs for women. Born out of a vision to uncover the unique essence of every woman, Piillz ‘n Poizn Atelier has worked tirelessly and risen through the ranks to uphold its values. Having featured in prestigious events, and rolling out remarkable collections of clothing designs, it has made a name for itself and won the hearts of its customers.

Their 2021 collection makes a bold statement for women, granting them the liberty to flaunt their femininity through vibrant colours, playful patterns, and innovative designs. From the choice of fabrics, prints and colours, to the designs; the collection exudes vibrancy.

For the first design, the idea of a fur-layered jacket on the crop top introduces sophistication to the attire, giving wearers the freedom to wear in two pieces as they please. With pants this free and with finesse cut at the ankle, the attire can be rocked to any occasion without the fear of not fitting in. Also, the choice of material for this beautiful piece enhanced its beauty and one definitely does not doubt its durability of it.

Looking at the other attire by the left, one cannot but think of the likes of Yemi Alade, Pokello Nare, and Nancy Isime who slay in African-themed attires like this. Its blend of African theme with European style makes it innovative. The flayed ankle area of the trouser is simply amazing and syncs well with the petit collar popular in the Western world.

One quality of great designs is the ability of the designer to creatively play around with fabrics and get awesome results. These two works of art above were whimsically crafted and look fabulous. Imagine slipping into this silverish-grey gown with such neckline, it’s simply impossible not to wear a smile at the thought. The idea of long sleeve synchronises well with the V-neck line. The fact that the dress is hemmed with materials forming a drape makes it creative and more stylish to wear. Coupled with the great choice of material, the overall style is fashionable and would stand the test of time in terms of trend. A statement accessory or a choker and gladiator heels or a flat clutch and a pair of sun shades will up ones elegance game with this attire.

The see-through idea on this gown reminds one of Jidenna. The attire displays sheer artistic mastery that celebrities like Lupita Nyong’o would undoubtedly shine in. The choice of material is perfect for the idea behind the creation. However, if the shoulder area were not made with see-through materials, wearers would not worry about undergarments being revealed when this beau is thrown on.

Umenyiora and George’s impertinent embrace of body positivity aligns perfectly with the bold fashion statements that her chunk of designs proclaim. Women of all body types and shapes can definitely stock up their wardrobes with her designs.

The use of bold prints and brilliant infusion of silhouettes in the attires above creates an atmosphere of sheer delight. From colourful floral patterns to quirky Afro-inspired cuts, these collections radiate African heritage and modernity in a fun and exuberant way. The hats are fashionable and complement the dresses.

However, perhaps, the layers of fabrics can be reduced to make the dress look smarter irrespective of the body shape of the wearer. The folds and layers seem too much, especially at the top. Again, while the idea behind this attire is great, its layered bulgy design incorporated at both the top area and the bottom makes it less appealing and difficult to style to suit individual personalities. With this taken into consideration, this elegant dress could be a versatile choice for many.

Additionally, the fabrics of the hats or fascinators seem a bit much. While some might argue differently, the hat might take a lot of work to position on your head without it covering your face. It would be nicer if the wearer toned down on their hairdo, make-up and accessories and let this gorgeous dress speak volumes.

In another display of artistry, the long-sleeved flowing, yet curvy gown created by the women, combines comfort with style. The choice of silk material means that comfort was prioritised when making this piece. Taking the harsh weather into perspective, this goes well for a classy summer outing. The infusion of net materials makes sure that a moderate amount of skin-pops out. The thread patterns create an artistic effect on the silk material, stepping it up from ordinary to visually appealing. The V-neck line is also a brilliant idea that compliments the entire design.

For an unforgettable look in this outfit, pair it with colourful heeled sandals, a clutch and a dropping earring to complement the opened neckline. This is a simple, yet stylish dress. Feel free to rock it as a wedding guest for that party Jollof you have been craving.

While this outfit looks nothing short of elegant, it could have been perfect if the extension of the flowing net stopped at the knee area. It looks great as it is. It could look awesome if shorter.

Each of the pieces turned out by Umenyiora and George at the 2021 Glitz Fashion Week invites wearers to embrace their individuality while celebrating the joy of dressing up.
